Tracking Memories

Leave a memory where it happened.

Pin a few words and photos to a real place. They stay sealed until someone stands within 30 metres. Then the seal breaks, and the memory is theirs to read.

In the app this opens within 30 m. Here, try it now.

See how it works, step by step

The app never tracks you. The location belongs to the memory, not to the person carrying the phone.

How a memory travels from you to them

Four moments, the same for a love letter on a park bench and a clue in a treasure hunt.

  1. Step 1: Leave it where it happened

Write a few lines and add up to six photos. Pin it to the spot where you are standing, or anywhere on the map.

Choose who it is for: one person, a group, or anyone who happens to pass by.

  2. Step 2: The seal holds

From far away, people see that something is waiting and roughly where. The words and photos stay sealed, with no preview and no blurred thumbnail.

It opens only for someone standing within 30 metres, close enough to touch the place it describes.

  3. Step 3: Follow the sonar

Within a mile, the brass sonar picks it up. The sweep shows the bearing, the readout counts the metres, and a soft ping quickens as you close in.

It works only while the app is open on your screen. Close it, and it stops looking.

  4. Step 4: Break the seal

Arrive, and the wax cracks, the page turns and the words ink in, in the hand they were written in. This is the only moment your phone vibrates.

The memory stays in your journal afterwards, with the date you found it. Only the date.

One hunt engine, seven ways to play

A moderator plants spots and writes the clues. Players walk to them, and each spot opens at 30 metres, exactly like a memory. Plan a hunt on your computer; play it on your phone.

  • An engraved treasure map with a tall ship, a compass rose and an island marked with an X.

    Clues in order, one prize

    Treasure hunt

Each clue leads to the next. The last spot hides the prize, written by the moderator, and the first player to reach it wins.

  • A sea chart with a compass rose and a sailing ship.

    Any order, points

    Classic

Spots scattered on the map, found in any order. Each one is worth points; the most points wins.

  • A town square at night with a clock tower over the rooftops.

    Against the clock

    Timed race

Everyone starts together. A live leaderboard ranks spots found, then finishing time.

  • An open journal with a pressed flower and a pen.

    Chapter by chapter

    Story trail

Every spot unlocks the next chapter. Walk a story in the order it was written.

  • Pressed spring flowers on a card, like a field specimen.

    Proof by photograph

    Photo challenge

Prove you were there with a photo. The moderator approves each one before the points count.

  • A sealed love letter under a garland of roses.

    For one person

    Memory match

A nostalgia hunt for a partner or an old friend, retracing the places only the two of you share.

  • An avenue of autumn trees with a lamp post.

    Teams, shared spots

    Team hunt

Teams race for the same spots. The first team to reach one takes full points; later teams get half.

Dress a hunt in one of fourteen themes, from a pirate’s map to a winter street.

  • Field Journal seal
  • Pirate seal
  • Love seal
  • Stargazer seal
  • Voyage seal
  • Winter seal
  • Spring seal
  • Summer seal
  • Fall seal
  • Halloween seal
  • Thanksgiving seal
  • Holidays seal
  • New Year's Eve seal
  • Fourth of July seal

Plan it at your desk. Play it on foot.

Moderators build hunts on trackingmemories.com with a full keyboard and a big map. Finding is phone-only: a spot opens for the person standing there, never for the browser.

  • Plant spots on a map anywhere in the world
  • Write each clue, chapter and prize
  • Drag to reorder, add photos, set teams and a time limit
  • Start the hunt and watch the leaderboard live
  • Approve photo proofs as they come in

Bring your people in

Groups hold your friends, family or team. Everyone you invite can accept or decline, and the organiser sees who has joined.

  • From your contacts

Pick one person and the app writes the text for you. We read only the contact you choose and never upload your address book.

  • With a link

Share it anywhere. Friends without the app land on a page that helps them get it.

  • With a code

Eight letters, easy to read aloud across a table. Links and codes expire after seven days.

Your own atlas

Every memory you left, every seal you broke, the hunts you played and the trophies you won, on one map of the world that only you can see. Open any pin to relive it.

Your map keeps the day you found something, never the time or the route. Turn it off or wipe it whenever you like.

We don’t track you. The pin belongs to the memory.

Most location apps want to know where you are all the time. This one only needs to know where the memories are. Here is everything that happens to your position:

  1. Your phone asks

While the app is open, it sends where you are with one question: what is near me?

  2. We answer

Memories within a mile, with direction and distance. Never the words inside.

  3. We forget

Your position is discarded. It is never written down, and never in our logs.

  • No background location

Location is used only while the app is on your screen. Never in your pocket, never while it is closed.

  • Dates, not times

When you find a memory, your journal keeps the day. Not the hour, and not how you got there.

  • Games are your choice

Joining a hunt records the time you reach each spot, for the leaderboard. Still never your position.

  • Photos lose their location

Hidden location data in every photo is stripped twice: on your phone, then again on our server.

  • Sealed means sealed

No preview, no blurred thumbnail. Only the author can reread a memory before someone reaches it.

  • Nothing watching here

This website runs no analytics, sets no cookies and loads nothing from other companies.

The full rules are in our draft privacy policy.

Kind by default

Memories are personal, and places are shared. Two content settings decide what you see, and the safeguards apply to everyone.

  • NormalEveryone starts here(selected by default)You never see public memories marked explicit. Memories sent to you personally always reach you.
  • ExplicitAdults only, by choiceAdult language and mature themes. Turned on in settings after confirming you are 18 or older.
  • Pornographic images are refused

They are never stored or shown, in any mode. Every new photo is checked before it is kept.

  • Report anything

A memory, a photo, a person, a group or a hunt: one tap sends it to a human moderator.

  • Block anyone

Blocked people disappear from your world, and you from theirs. Friendships end with the block.

Coming soon to iPhone and Android

Tracking Memories is on its way to the App Store and Google Play. Until then, start thinking about the first place you would leave a few words.

Questions, answered

Does the app track where I go?

No. Your position is used to answer “what is near me?” while the app is open, then thrown away. There is no background location, no location history, and no record of where you were when you opened something.

Why 30 metres?

A phone’s GPS is usually accurate to between 5 and 20 metres. Thirty metres is close enough to mean “you are here” without making you hunt for the exact paving stone.

Can I read a memory without going there?

No one can, not even with the website. The only exception is the author, who can always reread what they left.

Someone left me a memory, but I don’t have the app. What happens?

They send you a link. Open it, get the app and sign in, and the memory becomes yours. Then walk to the place to break the seal.

Can I make a treasure hunt on my computer?

Yes. Moderators can plant spots, write clues, invite players and run the leaderboard from trackingmemories.com. Finding a spot always needs a phone at the place.

What is the Explicit setting?

An adults-only choice for mature language and themes, off for everyone by default. Pornographic images are refused in every setting.

What does this website collect?

Nothing about your visit. No analytics, no advertising, no cookies, and the fonts are served from our own domain.
